The bookworm eats books
letter by letter.
The fancier the font,
the tastier and better.

She lunches on letters;
swallows syllables whole.
Words once intelligible
she leaves incomplete and null.

Syllable by syllable
she ingests the whole word.
Her literary chewing
is quite bookishly absurd.

She eats word after word
till she downs the final dot
that marks the end of the sentence
that completes the writer’s thought.

Sentence by sentence
she polishes off the paragraph.
What a sight to see her munching!
It is sure to make you laugh.

Paragraph by paragraph,
she chomps the chapter bite by bite.
Her refined and scholarly palate
tastes if grammar is wrong or right.

Chapter by chapter
she feasts till she’s done
with book one in the series.
Then she'll exclaim “That was fun!”

Then she’s on to the sequel;
she’ll eat the entire set.
Indeed, this avid reader
is a book-devouring pet.

Book by book,
series by series,
volume by volume,
she cleans out libraries.

When no library is left unread,
she’ll start back at the beginning.
All the while while she is reading,
she is quietly, contentedly grinning.
